Review: Benjamin Moore’s Waterborne Alkyd paint

When you want to refresh your home with a splash of colour or create a cozy space out of a cold one, the last thing you want to do is choose the wrong type of paint. You may be surprised to find that there are different types of paint, not just brands. Two of the most common types to find are water-based, like latex paint, and oil-based paint.

If you’re still asking yourself what the difference is and why it matters, the interior painting experts at Court-Hampton explain. In the video below, we test out a water based alkyd paint by Benjamin Moore.

Our Verdict

As these ecopaint products develop, they just keep getting better and better! The waterborne formula of this paint gives a beautiful flow, even colour distribution and a glossy finish. The first thing we noticed when we opened the can was the underwhelming smell. There was very little smell to this paint, which gives it a huge advantage for interior painting, especially in small spaces like bathrooms or crawlspaces.

This paint has great flow and is nice to work with. It glides on seamlessly and does a great job covering old paint. The fact that it sticks the first time to a spot previously painted with oil-based paint saves a lot of time overall. With just a light sanding, a first coat can be laid down without much fuss.

What we like about this paint especially is that it’s an easy cleanup. Because water-based (and latex) paints are water-soluble, a quick wipe with a damp cloth takes care of any smudges or drips. With the low VOC and easy cleanup, the verdict on Benjamin Moore’s Advance Waterborne Alkyd interior paint is the best of both worlds! A water-based paint that behaves like an oil-based paint, without the fumes and difficult cleanup has to be one of our favourites to use!
